here is the story....The Viking island of Berk has been plagued by attacks from dragons that steal their livestock and burn their buildings. Hiccup, son of the village chief Stoick the Vast, is a scrawny teenager who tries to invent machines to take down dragons, both to prove his worth and to impress Astrid, a competent and competitive girl of his age. Hiccup's efforts only serve to get in the way. After another dragon raid, Stoick rallies a fleet to seek out the dragons' lair, while enlisting Hiccup in dragon-killing school under the tutelage of the village blacksmith, Gobber.
One day, between lessons, Hiccup discovers one of his contraptions has actually caught a Night Fury, the most dangerous dragon known. Unable to kill the helpless dragon, Hiccup instead cuts it free; the dragon briefly roars at him before disappearing into the forest. Hiccup returns later to find the dragon unable to leave a shallow glade due to a tail injury that prevents it from flying. By trial and error, Hiccup discovers a way to earn the dragon's trust and begins to care for it. He names the Night Fury "Toothless," for its retractable teeth. Soon after, Hiccup fashions a make-shift harness and prosthetic tail that allows Toothless to fly while he rides the dragon.
Hiccup is able to transfer his knowledge to the other species of dragons at school, appearing to conquer each one in battle and becoming the star pupil, much to Astrid's dismay. She discovers Hiccup and Toothless after a private conversation with Hiccup, Toothless seeing that Astrid was harming Hiccup comes to attack Astrid. Hiccup separates the two and tries to explain to Astrid about the situation. But before she can tell anyone else, Hiccup tries again to explain by taking her for a ride on Toothless. Toothless, not ready to accept Astrid, takes her at first on a wild and scary ride as a punishment for the cruelty towards Hiccup until she apologizes. When she does, he takes the two humans on a romantic flight. As they enjoy the ride, Toothless unexpectedly joins a horde of dragons flying towards a remote island with more stolen livestock. Watching from a distance, the three learn the dragons are forced to feed the livestock to a gargantuan dragon lest they be eaten themselves. Hiccup, Astrid and Toothless escape and return to Berk just as Stoick and the wounded fleet return, their search fruitless.
Hiccup is put to the final test the next day. When he tries to pacify the dragon, Stoick attempts to stop the battle, but he inadvertently angers the dragon, endangering Hiccup. Toothless hears Hiccup's cries, and flies in to save him, but ends up captured by the other Vikings. Hiccup is forced to reveal the truth, including discovering the dragons' lair. Stoick disowns his son and sets off with the fleet, using a restrained Toothless as their guide. Astrid inspires Hiccup to try and stop the Viking fleet with the help of the training dragons and the other teenagers. After quickly teaching the other students on training their dragons, they race off to intercept the fleet.
They arrive too late, as the Vikings have already encountered the gigantic dragon. Hiccup, Astrid and the others provide a distraction to allow the Vikings to retreat safely, but the boat on which Toothless is restrained sinks into the ocean. Hiccup attempts to free Toothless, but both are rescued by a now-repentant Stoick. Hiccup and Toothless lure the giant dragon into flight, eventually leading it into a head-first dive towards the ground. Toothless turns at the last minute to ignite the giant dragon's breath, prevent it from breaking out of the dive in time and killing it on impact. The maneuver causes Hiccup to fall from Toothless and black out, but the dragon races through the flames to save him.
Hiccup wakes up back on Berk, finding an eager Toothless greeting him. As he leaves his bed, he discovers one of his legs has been replaced by a prosthetic device. Outside, he is surprised to find the Vikings and dragons working together to rebuild their village--with the giant dragon gone, the other dragons are no longer forced to steal food, there being enough food for both dragons and Vikings. He is given a hero's welcome by Stoick, Astrid, and the other Vikings, and then flies off on Toothless to join Astrid and the other teens on their own dragon mounts.
